CFP's Bill Hancock Says Group Not Feeling Pressure To Move Games Off New Year's Eve

After ratings for the CFP semifinal games plummeted in year two, CFP Exec Dir Bill Hancock said his group is "not feeling any pressure to make a decision anytime real soon" on moving the games off New Year's Eve. Appearing on "The Paul Finebaum Show," Hancock said, "We still know that one year does not make a trend, but it was a significant trend. ... We were faced with noncompetitive games this year, but we were also faced with a weekday New Year's Eve date. So the wheels are still churning, and I really don't know when we'll come up with an answer." Hancock added the CFP will "learn a little bit more this year," as the games are on a Saturday. Hancock: "We'll still have the New Year's Eve situation but maybe not as many people will be working, and ... we have moved the kickoffs up an hour which should help us." Meanwhile, Hancock said officials are "targeting the spring" of '18 for a decision on the location of the '20 championship game. He added, "That could change, but we learned that the further out we can go the better to give the host cities times to prepare. ... We would like to take it everywhere in the country that we can. We are proud of the fact that of the first six years of the playoff, all six championship games will be in different states." Hancock said the CFP is "all teed up to go to northern sites if everything works out." Hancock said of nine cities bidding for the '20 championship game, "It's about what we expected. We knew the interest was going to grow in the playoff as people began to figure out what it was and how good it was going to be for cities" ("The Paul Finebaum Show," ESPN Radio, 7/6).
