NBA Finals Viewership Down Only 1% From '15 Despite Blowouts For Cavs-Warriors Games

ABC has averaged 18.27 million viewers for a pair of lopsided NBA Finals telecasts to date, down slightly (-1%) from 18.52 million viewers last year, when both of the first two games went to overtime. This year's Cavaliers-Warriors matchup is still the second-best average on record for ABC through two games of the NBA Finals. Cavs-Warriors Game 2 on Sunday night finished with 17.36 million viewers, down 9% from 19.17 million viewers for the same matchup last year. Peak viewership was 19.37 million viewers from 10:00-10:30pm ET and gave ABC another win in primetime. Despite the blowouts, the audience this season is well above figures from '14. ABC through two games of the Spurs-Heat matchup two years ago was averaging 14.99 million viewers -- 22% below the current average. The Heat-Spurs matchup in '13 was averaging 14.4 million viewers -- 27% below Cavs-Warriors to date. Meanwhile, the three NBA games last week were the most-tweeted sports events for the week, according to data from Nielsen Social. Warriors-Thunder Western Conference Finals Game 7 led the way, as 2.32 million event-related tweets were sent out in the U.S. during a time frame that spanned three hours before the game to three hours after it ended. A peak of 59,500 tweets were sent out at 11:59pm on May 30 as Warriors G Stephen Curry made a three-point shot with seconds left in the game. NBA Finals Game 1 on June 2 ranked No. 2 last week, as 1.61 million tweets were sent out around the game, while Game 2 ranked No. 3 for the week with 1.58 million tweets. The No. 4 sports event -- UFC 199 -- drew only 247,000 tweets around that event on Saturday night.
