MLS Attendance Up Slightly Headed Into Copa America Break; Toronto FC Sees Big Gains

Heading into a break in the regular season schedule for the playing of the Copa America Centenario, MLS teams through June 2 were averaging 21,087 fans per game, up slightly over the same time period in '15. There are nine clubs averaging over 20,000 fans to date, led again by Sounders FC with 39,848. The club has led in attendance each season since entering the league in '09 and have plans to open CenturyLink Field to full capacity for five of the remaining home matches in '16. Orlando City SC ranks second in the league with 35,115 per game during its sophomore season, but that figure is down 4% to date. The Impact have the league’s highest per-game increase after selling out every home game played at Saputo Stadium to date. The Galaxy have seen an increase of 19% over last season, while an expanded BMO Field has led to a 17% increase in attendance at Toronto FC home matches. In San Jose, the Earthquakes have sold out every match at played at Avaya Stadium since it opened in '15. But the team's 17% decrease is a result of a designated home game played at Levi’s Stadium last season. FC Dallas, despite having the second-best record in the Western Conference, ranks last in the league in attendance at 13,749 per game, down 6.8% from the same point last year.
