Minnesota United FC Stadium Property Tax Exemption Nearly Foiled By Wording Error

A wording error in the Minnesota legislature’s tax bill "exposed a potential money shortfall" for the Vikings’ new stadium on Wednesday, and if uncorrected, that error also "threatens to foil plans to help build Minnesota United FC’s proposed soccer stadium in St. Paul," according to Andy Greder of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. The mistake "appears to be a fix" both Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Daudt are "willing to make." Dayton during a news conference on Wednesday said that he "would not sign the tax bill because a single word in its nearly 300 pages would cause" a $102.4M "reduction in charitable gambling revenue over three years to fund the Vikings’ U.S. Bank Stadium." Greder: "An 'and' should have been used instead of an 'or' on a change to the tax charged on paper pull tabs in bingo halls." Included in the bill was Minnesota United’s "request for a property tax exemption for the stadium site." The soccer team's property tax break request "was the biggest of three Legislative asks they have said are vital to privately finance" a $150M stadium. Dayton requested a "special session to address the edit" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 6/2).
