Top Rank's Bob Arum, Al Haymon Settle Antitrust Lawsuit; Terms Not Released

Bob Arum's Top Rank and Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions have "settled their dispute" in U.S. District Court after Haymon was sued by Arum last year for $100M over what Arum claimed were predatory practices by Haymon, according to Steve Carp of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. Arum in his suit claimed there were antitrust violations with the creation of the PBC that were "violating the federal Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act." Terms of the settlement "were not disclosed." Haymon was accused of "monopolizing fighters and also serving as their manager and promoter, a violation of the Ali Act." Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions in May '15 sued Haymon "on similar grounds" for $300M. That lawsuit "remains ongoing" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 5/20). In L.A., Lance Pugmire notes Haymon was "closely involved" with Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s departure from Top Rank in '06. The Arum-Haymon lawsuit came about after Haymon formed PBC and "began negotiating broadcast deals with all of the major networks while beefing up his stable to an estimated 200 fighters." Arum "was left to place bouts on HBO and cable network TruTV while Haymon relied on an influx reported to be in excess" of $400M from a venture capital firm in Kansas to "fund his business, which had time-buy arrangements with NBC, CBS and ESPN" (L.A. TIMES, 5/20). Arum said that the "prospect of a rematch" between Mayweather, Haymon's top client, and Manny Pacquiao, whom Arum promotes, "had nothing to do" with the settlement. ESPN.com's Dan Rafael noted the sides had been "deep into the discovery process and had been exchanging documents when they stopped about two weeks ago." But then "came the settlement" (ESPN.com, 5/19).
