MLB Franchise Notes: Padres Face Dilemma In Inducting Caminiti Into Team HOF

The Padres last week announced that the late Ken Caminiti would be inducted into the team's HOF, despite the former MLBer being "an admitted accomplice in blow-torching baseball's integrity" after "his rampant use of steroids." In San Diego, Bryce Miller writes no matter how "productive and popular he became in San Diego," Caminiti "knew the rules." Miller: "He broke the rules. He benefited unfairly. He confirmed it, unapologetically." So "why in the world would the Padres sign off on this?" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/11).

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: In Baltimore, Eduardo Encina notes the Orioles' fourth postponement of the season on Monday night"created a schedule that has not only taken away two future days off but leaves little flexibility to accommodate future rescheduling of rainouts." Not only does playing a makeup game on July 28 force the Orioles to play games on 17 consecutive days following the All-Star break, it also means the Orioles "have no more days off after break to schedule a makeup game without violating the rule" in the CBA that "prevents teams from playing more than 20 consecutive days without player's union approval" (Baltimore SUN, 5/11).

REALITY CHECK? ESPN.com's Jim Bowden noted year after year, the Yankees "take the position that their fan base will not accept a sell-off of top talent; even in down years, they must always strive to put the best product on the field even if it's obvious the team needs to be retooled." But the reality is if the Yankees want to get back to being a contender "anytime soon, they need to be sellers over the next couple months." It will "take some effort, and it could be tough for the fan base to witness, but if they do it right, they can go right back to being buyers again this offseason" (ESPN.com, 5/10).

GOOD TO SEE YOU: In California, Steve Fryer writes the Angels and Dodgers play each other four times next week with two games at Dodger Stadium and two at Angel Stadium, and no matter the standings, the games "will be fun and the stadiums will be packed" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 5/11).
