MLB Franchise Notes: Twins Owner Pohlad Unhappy With Team's Poor Start To Season

The Twins sit at 8-23, last in the AL, after the weekend, and in St. Paul, Charley Walters noted even if the team can "climb back to .500 ... club owner Jim Pohlad won't consider that a success." Pohlad said, "I know that I'm not the only one who is mad. The fans feel that way, everyone feels that way." He added, "Surprised, frustrated, disappointed. Upset? Yeah, upset's an OK word. I certainly wouldn't want to give anyone the impression we weren't upset" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 5/8).

A BRONX FAIL? In N.Y., Mike Lupica wrote under the header, "Empty Seats Will Haunt Yankee Stadium If Season Continues On This Path." The Yankees "need to keep winning, because if they don’t you wonder what the ballpark might look like a few months from now." The team might think it can "start to fill those empty blue seats near the field." However, the Yankees "haven't been really fun to watch for a while." Lupica: "It’s why this is a fair question for Yankee fans these days: Whom do they want to buy a ticket to watch?" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/8).

SUPPLY AND DEMAND
: In Chicago, Rick Morrissey wrote he could not figure out how fans "trying to make ends meet can take in a game" at Wrigley Field and not head "straight to bankruptcy court afterward." The prices at Wrigley "are ridiculous but not so ridiculous that Thursday’s announced crowd of 37,564 decided to stay home." Morrissey: "In other words, I can shake my head at how much it costs to go to a game and ask what it means for the future of the republic, but the fact is that people keep spending" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/7).
