Audience Analysis: Leicester City's EPL Title Gives NBC Strong Cable, Digital Numbers

Tottenham Hotspur-Chelsea on Monday drew 145,000 unique visitors on NBC Sports Live Extra, marking the platform’s most-streamed EPL match on record. The draw gave Leicester City its first EPL title. Meanwhile, NBCSN on Sunday drew 908,000 viewers for Leicester City-Manchester United, which also could have given Leicester the '15-16 title, but ended in a draw. That figure marks the best EPL match on the cable net since Arsenal-Chelsea drew 979,000 viewers on April 26, 2015. It also drew 143,000 uniques, marking NBC Sports Live Extra’s second-best EPL match.

FIGHTING CHANCE: Fox drew 1.62 million viewers for its Premier Boxing Champions telecast last Saturday, which was highlighted by Andre Berto’s fourth-round TKO over Victor Ortiz (2.0 million viewers for the main event). The complete PBC telecast had competition from Penguins-Capitals Game 2 on NBC and Thunder-Spurs Game 1 on TNT. The 1.62 million viewers is above what NBC drew for its PBC telecast on April 22 (1.26 million viewers). That NBC telecast had competition from UFC on Fox 19, Hawks-Celtics Game 1 on ESPN and Thunder-Mavericks Game 1 on ESPN. Last Saturday’s PBC telecast also was down from Fox’ debut PBC effort on Jan. 23 (2.52 million viewers), which had competition from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on NBC and Bulls-Cavaliers on ABC.

TALLADEGA SIGHTS: Fox saw an uptick for its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series coverage from Talladega last Sunday afternoon. The race drew 6.66 million viewers, up from 6.31 million last year. The same race in ’14 drew 6.9 million viewers. Fox also saw a gain for the Talladega Xfinity Series race on Saturday afternoon. The race drew 2.95 million viewers, up from 2.4 million viewers last year, when it had to compete with Kentucky Derby prerace coverage.

NOTES: ESPN2’s “First Take” continued a recent hot streak, drawing its best April audience on record. The net averaged 375,000 viewers during its 10:00am-12:00pm ET window. Leading into “First Take,” ESPN2’s “Mike & Mike” had its second-best April on record, averaging 255,000 viewers.
