NBCSN Angers Blues, Stars Fans By Not Switching To Start Of Game In Home Markets

The start of last night's Stars-Blues Western Conference Semifinal Game 3 was bumped to NHL Network when NBC Sports "opted to stay with the overtime" of Lightning-Islanders Eastern Conference Semifinal Game 3 on NBCSN, but NHL Network is "unavailable to much of St. Louis," according to the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. The Blues on their official Twitter feed noted NBCSN would switch to Stars-Blues inside the St. Louis market when it started, but that "didn't happen." NBCSN "cut back" to Stars-Blues after Lightning-Islanders concluded, but "not before the St. Louis audience missed the first two goals" of the game (STLTODAY.com, 5/3). Fans in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market with AT&T UVerse and Dish Network also "did not have the game switched" to NBCSN. In Dallas, Scott Bell noted part of the net's coverage during that time includes "intermission analysis back in the studio" before OT. The first period of Stars-Blues was "more than halfway done when NBCSN picked it up on its national feed" (DALLASNEWS.com, 5/3). An NBC spokesperson in a statement said, “Select satellite and telco providers in Dallas and St. Louis inadvertently did not follow normal procedures and switch to the beginning of the Stars-Blues game. We are taking additional steps to ensure that this does not happen in the future" (THE DAILY).

TWITTER REACTION: Dallas Morning News’ Tim Cowlishaw: “Gone to NBC Sports app on iPad. Just wish NBCSN hadn't lied about coverage in Dallas and St. Louis. Still an amateur network.” St. Louis Post-Dispatch editor Gilbert Bailon: “NHL you are flattering yourself if you think all hockey fans get the the NHL Network. Get a clue and put it on another channel.” St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Ben Frederickson: “Really shocked the NHL messed this TV situation up. Maybe the games should start later next year. … If the Blues score and most of their fans can't see it on TV, does it still count?” San Antonio Express-News’ David Hinojosa: “Is NHL Network even a thing? … See, the NBA starts their late games on networks that people have.” Dallas-area WFAA-AM’s Ted Madden: “So it appears AT&T U-verse doesn't have the NHL Network. So I'll listen to the #Stars on the radio, like it's 1980. Great.”
