Showtime Signs Multi-Fight Deal With Up-And-Coming Heavyweight Anthony Joshua

Showtime has signed an "exclusive multi-fight deal" with IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua, with his first title defense set for June 25 in London against Dominic Breazeale, according to Kevin Iole of YAHOO SPORTS. Joshua, who won a Gold Medal at the '12 London Games for Great Britain, is considered "one of the sport's most promising stars." The deal is important for Showtime because a "star heavyweight boxer is always a big draw and Joshua oozes talent." Joshua, who improved to 16-0 after knocking out Charles Martin on April 9 to claim the title, is a "charismatic personality who figures to resonate with the fan base when he begins to fight top-level competition." HBO also was "interested in Joshua," but the net "appears to be having budgetary issues, as its schedule so far this year has been sparse" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/4). CBSSPORTS.com's Lyle Fitzsimmons notes the Joshua-Breazeale fight will air on Showtime "in the late afternoon and leads into a primetime show on CBS that matches welterweights Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter from Barclays Center" (CBSSPORTS.com, 5/4).
