Sources said that there are "nine leading candidates" to be the next Univ. of Minnesota AD. The list is "wide-ranging and includes executives from the Rocky Mountain to Wall Street." Each of the nine has a "previous tie to Minnesota or the Upper Midwest." The nine candidates Turnkey Search has screened for the job at Minnesota are Penn State Deputy AD PHIL ESTEN, Northern Illinois AD SEAN FRAZIER, Minnesota interim AD BETH GOETZ, U.S. Bank Senior VP DAVID GUTZKE, CNBC Stock Analyst PETE NAJARIAN, WCHA Commissioner BILL ROBERTSON, Minneapolis attorney BOB STEIN, Univ. of Iowa Deputy AD GENE TAYLOR and Mountain West Commissioner CRAIG THOMPSON (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 4/29).

KINER'S KORNER: MLB scorer HOWIE KARPIN and MARK ROSENMAN wrote a book called "DOWN ON THE KORNER" about late Mets announcer RALPH KINER and his postgame show "Kiner's Korner." The idea for the book "literally tumbled out of a wall at Rosenman's house" shortly after Kiner died in early '14 at the age of 91. The book "has an endearingly unpolished, unfocused tone, much like Kiner's show, and some stories are repetitive." However, there are plenty of "nuggets to be mined in an oral history featuring the best of the 65 to 70 players the authors interviewed" (NEWSDAY, 4/29).
