The Technology Responsible For Keeping Hallowed Sports Grounds Suitable For Play All Over The World

While there is a tremendous amount of money, time labor and attention invested into venue’s hosting sporting events, an under-appreciated aspect of sports venue management is the fields and pitches themselves.

The team at Pots, Planters and More has put together a visual guide that shows grounds-keeping traditions and technology used at some of the most famous sporting complexes around the world.

A few of the key highlights from the infographic below include:

  • The grass at Wimbledon is mowed at least once and sometimes even twice a day, as it always needs to maintain a 8mm height.  Centre Court is also only used for two weeks of the year for the tournament but is maintained year-round to maintain a condition that is tournament standard.
  • Due to the unique stadium shape of Lambeau Field, some parts of the field receive little to no natural light.  Groundskeepers are forced to run giant grow light rigs on the field, around the clock, seven days a week from October-December and they only stop during home games.
  • Augusta National Golf Club has both a weather station and a soil lab on-site to maintain the prestigious grass at near perfect conditions for the Masters.
