USOC, NBC Partner On Initiative Encouraging Kids To Learn More About Various Sports

The USOC and NBC yesterday announced a new initiative called Gold Map, a "way to encourage kids to get a little bit more active in their communities," according to NBC's Matt Lauer. U.S. sprinter Allyson Felix said the various U.S. NGBs have “come together to just give more information to kids” about their sports. Felix said, “Lots of kids are going to be inspired by the Olympics, and they’re going to want to do sports that they may not know about. So this is a place where they can get information for their parents, so that they can try out these new sports.” NBC’s Matt Lauer said, “Kids get into a rut in this country: Baseball, basketball, soccer. But there are so many other sports.” NBC’s Savannah Guthrie said the idea is that kids will "see a sport they like" and then "use this Gold Map and ... find somewhere in their communities where they can get involved in that sport” (“Today,” NBC, 4/27).
