Potential Stadium Construction Delays Could Force Dolphins To Move Preseason Games

The Dolphins have talked to Florida Atlantic Univ. about the "possibility of moving their home preseason games" to FAU Stadium in Boca Raton if renovations to their stadium are not completed in time, according to a source cited by Hal Habib of the PALM BEACH POST. Another possibility "might be" Florida Int'l Univ.'s football stadium in Miami. The Dolphins, which are "keeping contingency plans quiet, also could have other sites in mind outside South Florida." The team "held a preseason scrimmage at FIU last summer that was well-received." But since FIU has "no legitimate pressbox, both the team and the NFL might think twice about placing an exhibition there." FAU has "ample accommodations to handle the written and broadcast media" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 4/27). Meanwhile, Univ. of Miami AD Blake James said that with stadium upgrades running a few weeks behind schedule and tens of millions of dollars over budget, UM is "putting contingency plans in place in case the stadium is not playable in time for the Sept. 3 opener against Florida A&M." UM also plays at home the next Saturday, Sept. 10, against FAU. The Dolphins continue to publicly say that they "fully expect the stadium will be ready by their Aug. 25 preseason home opener" against the Falcons on NBC (MIAMIHERALD.com, 4/26).
