De La Hoya Optimistic Alvarez-Khan Fight At T-Mobile Arena In May Will Sell Out

Golden Boy Promotions co-Founder & President Oscar De La Hoya said that more than 14,000 tickets "have been sold" for the May 7 Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan fight at T-Mobile Arena, and he "thinks the fight will sell out," according to Steve Carp of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. T-Mobile can accommodate 20,000 for boxing and will be "scaled back to about 18,000" for the fight. As promoter of the fight, which will be televised on HBO, De La Hoya is "trying to sell a fight many believe is a mismatch." Alvarez is "a 5-1 favorite in Las Vegas sports books." This fight is "as much about De La Hoya’s company making a comeback as it is about its star fighter." The company had an "acrimonious split" with former CEO Richard Schaefer two years ago and lost fighters like Leo Santa Cruz to Premier Boxing Champions. De La Hoya also has "battled substance abuse problems over the years." But today, all "appears well at Golden Boy." De La Hoya said that he "feels great." He has "enough good young fighters along with Alvarez to do business with HBO." De La Hoya has "people working for him that he trusts." With T-Mobile Arena open, De La Hoya said that Las Vegas "will be a destination for Golden Boy in the future" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 4/21).
