National Basketball League Of America To Debut In September, Three Teams Announced

The National Basketball League of America on Tuesday “announced the Omaha Chargers as one of the debut teams” for the nascent league that “begins play in September,” according to Rich Kaipust of the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD. The plans “are for Omaha to play around 10 home games at Ralston Arena between September and November and about a 20-game schedule.” Other teams officially lined up for ’16 “are the Sioux City Hornets and the Dakota Magic, who will be based in Mitchell, South Dakota.” Additionally, the NBLA “is talking with at least three other regional cities.” NBLA members “likely will have games against teams from the National Basketball League of Canada, the Premier Basketball League and possibly international teams.” The NBLA “hopes to stir interest by partly building rosters with familiar local names.” The NBLA season will "lead into the National Basketball League of Canada season, allowing for players to potentially compete in both rather than having to go overseas." NBLA President Darryl Greene said that the pay for players "would be anywhere from $500 to $1,500 a week during the season." Greene: "If we can get 2,500 fans in there on a consistent basis in the first year, we’re going to do quite well" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 4/20).
