Reyes Still Facing Possible Suspension Despite Not Standing Trial For Domestic Abuse

Rockies SS Jose Reyes "could still face a suspension" from MLB despite the fact he will not stand trial in Hawaii on charges of domestic abuse because his wife "isn't cooperating" with local authorities, according to Patrick Saunders of the DENVER POST. Reyes "was scheduled to go to trial" Monday, the same day of the Rockies' season opener. He was placed on "paid leave" in February under MLB's domestic violence policy, pending completion of the criminal proceedings. The Rockies have had "only limited contact with Reyes while he was suspended" (DENVER POST, 3/31). ESPN.com's Pedro Gomez cited a source as saying that the prosecutor's decision "does not mean MLB will let the case drop." The source noted that Reyes' situation "is similar to that" of Yankees P Aroldis Chapman, who was suspended 30 games despite no criminal charges being filed.  The source said that Reyes "will likely be suspended and that any punishment might not be handed down by the time the Rockies' season starts on Monday." The Rockies are "expected to wait until MLB decides on any discipline before addressing the issue" (ESPN.com, 3/30).
