CFP, SEC Opt Not To Take Stances On Georgia's Controversial Religious Freedom Bill

The CFP yesterday said that it "opposes discrimination but will allow others to best decide whether a controversial religious freedom bill in Georgia becomes law," according to Jon Solomon of CBSSPORTS.com. The SEC said that it is "'attentive' to what's happening in the state" where it has held its football championship game since '94. The NCAA said that it is "monitoring events in Georgia." The NFL has suggested that Atlanta's chances of hosting the Super Bowl "could be impacted if the bill is signed into law." Hundreds of businesses, "including major corporations, have opposed the bill." College sports "has a major foothold in Atlanta," which is home to the College Football HOF and the '18 CFP title game. One CFP semifinal game also is "scheduled to be in Atlanta next season at the Peach Bowl." The SEC "recently re-signed with Atlanta" through '26 "with the option of adding two five-year extensions." The NCAA men's basketball Final Four also is "scheduled for Atlanta" in '20, while the NCAA this spring "has a women's gymnastics regional and the swimming and diving championships in Georgia." There are now 21 states that have "some kind of religious freedom laws." Missouri is "debating a proposed religious freedom amendment to the state constitution -- a potential law that could cost" K.C. the Big 12 men's basketball tournament (CBSSPORTS.com, 3/21).
