Minneapolis City Council Approves $129M In Renovations For Target Center

The Minneapolis City Council on Friday gave final approval for the $129M Target Center renovation that "will improve the building’s exterior, add club spaces and improve basic infrastructure," according to Nick Halter of the MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL. The T'Wolves said that construction "should begin in May" and will be complete in fall '17 (BIZJOURNALS.com, 3/18). In Minneapolis, Eric Roper reported the plan will cost the city about $74M from sales tax dollars, and the T'Wolves are kicking in $49M. Target Center operator AEG is contributing $5.9M. The motion "drew some critics who objected to the city pursuing the project while grappling with basic service needs." The renovation will "redo the exterior of the building, create a glassy new entranceway, add crucial loading dock space, reconfigure some interior fan areas and add more premium amenities." About $102.8M of the total cost is "for the construction itself" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 3/19).
