Warner Bros., SpringHill Partnership May Determine LeBron James' Next Career

The partnership between Warner Bros. and SpringHill Entertainment, LeBron James' production company, is one in which James “plays a bit role” currently, but it could "determine what’s waiting for him in Hollywood when his basketball career is over,” according to Joe Vardon of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. LRMR Management Founder Maverick Carter said SpringHill "has to live on" after James is finished in the NBA. Vardon noted Carter "is still James' business manager," but "most of his energy is now focused on Hollywood." Upon the July announcement of Warner Bros. and SpringHill’s multiyear partnership, speculation “immediately turned to James one day starring in the sequel to 'Space Jam.'" Warner Bros. filed for Space Jam trademarks in June, a “potential signal for new merchandise for, say, a new movie, but nothing is imminent.” Carter says the movie “hasn’t been discussed in detail with Warner,” and James “couldn’t even entertain that discussion" until he is finished with the Cavs this season at the earliest. Vardon noted beginning production of “Space Jam 2” in James’ limited time this summer “would seem virtually impossible.” Since the deal was signed, Warner and Turner Sports "together invested" nearly $16M in a separate James-Carter venture called "Uninterrupted," a "digital-only company that provides athletes with an on-line platform." Warner and "Uninterrupted" are working on a digital comedy series called "Now We're Talking," which is about "washed-up quarterbacks turned broadcasters, for the go90 app." SpringHill President Jamal Henderson "envisions the long-term future of SpringHill as perhaps a 'vehicle' for James to star in films" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 3/15).
