49ers Unveil Commemorative Logo Celebrating 70th Anniversary In The NFL

To begin a year-long celebration of the 49ers' 70th anniversary, the organization yesterday released a commemorative logo that will be featured on a uniform patch, as well as team retail and promotional items throughout the '16 season. Inspired by the franchise’s “Shield” design, the logo includes five squares in the upper left corner of the shield representing each of the franchise’s Super Bowl victories, as well as modern components of the team’s brand such as the current “SF Oval” logo font for the word “years” and the current uniform jersey font for the numbers (49ers). The SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS notes the logo is "quite busy, with red sections, white sections and lots of gold lines and numbers." The numbers in the upper right -- 46 and 16 -- are "references to the founding and current years." However, the team "could have made the years smaller and positioned them near the bottom -- under the large 70" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 3/8).
