Addition Of Student Athletic Fee Helps Arizona State Set Revenue Record In '14-15

Arizona State athletics made a record $84M in FY '15 "largely due to the addition of a student athletic fee" that raised nearly $10M, according to Metcalfe & Ryman of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The 13% increase in revenue from almost $75M in the previous FY is "almost matched" by a 12.5% increase in expenses, $74.5M in '14 to $83.8M in '15. The mandatory ASU student athletic fee, "instituted with support from student government, is $75 per semester." ASU's fee brought in $9.9M to athletics for FY '15, "about what officials predicted it would generate." For students, the fee "covers admission to all athletic events and certain other perks, including student seating sections." Revenue from ticket sales fell from $12.8M in FY '14 to $11M "primarily due" to a 17.5% dip in football revenue. Men's basketball revenue also fell from $1.4M in '13-14 to $1M in '14-15. Because of a coaching change, ASU had a $2.6M "severance expense to pay" to former men's basketball coach Herb Sendek. ASU received $9.4M in subsidies in FY '15, which the NCAA calls "direct or indirect institutional support." This was down slightly from $10M the previous year. ASU's school subsidy dropped from 13% of athletics total revenue in '14 to 11% for '15 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 3/4).
