UFC's Dana White Taking Less-Visible Role With Media To Allow For Fighter Growth

There has been a "noticeable switch" in UFC in the past year with President Dana White being "far less accessible to the media," according to Kevin Iole of YAHOO SPORTS. White not being in the spotlight has "led to more of a focus on the fighters and the events of the current week." Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey would have "become big-time stars regardless of how White was used" as a promoter, but with the spotlight off White, it allows UFC to "grow exponentially if the fighters can sell it." For a long time, White's promoting strategy was similar to boxing promoter Don King's because he "promoted himself more than he ever promoted a fight." Iole wrote it also "probably wasn't White's intention to market himself," but his presence for nearly 15 years made him "a bigger star than any of his fighters." The Web series "Dana White: Lookin' for a Fight" has also "replaced the old video blog he did," in which he would take viewers "behind the scenes of UFC events." The newer blog "still affords White plenty of camera time" and is also "an effective way to gain UFC newcomers some notoriety" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 2/29).
