Franchise Notes

In L.A., Kevin Baxter reported the Galaxy will "debut new uniforms" this season, with the main difference being the traditional "broken blue slash across the front ... replaced with solid blue and gold bars that run from the left shoulder to the right hip." Jersey sponsor Herbalife also "added the word 'nutrition' below the company name" as part of a "wide-ranging rebrand." The Galaxy usually change their uniform design "slightly every season, partly to drive shirt sales." However, this makeover "was the most dramatic in several years" (LATIMES.com, 2/24).

TAXING DECISIONS: Heat President Pat Riley said that injuries to Heat F Chris Bosh and G Beno Udrih "could lead to a rethinking" of his approach to the NBA luxury tax. Riley said, "We have our limitations financially as far as what we can do and how much there's a certain date, but obviously being down a point guard, we may have to rethink that." Riley had previously said the team would wait to add additional players "in order to not pay the amount of salary that would push the team's payroll back into the tax" (Ira Winderman, South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 2/26).

PUT ON NOTICE: In Philadelphia, Mike Sielski writes it would be "easy to assume" that the 76ers' hiring of Jerry Colangelo as Chair of Basketball Operations would "put Sam Hinkie's job as general manager at risk over the long term." However, after an "awful effort" Wednesday in a loss to the Pistons, Colangelo might decide that poor team performance "says something about Brett Brown's head coaching ability." Despite Brown having signed a two-year extension right after Colangelo was hired, Sielski writes "history suggests that Colangelo's presence ought to put everyone on notice" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 2/26).
