Bull Durham Musical Headed For Broadway With Hope Of Capturing Minor-League Vibe

"Bull Durham" the musical "appears to be headed for Broadway after going through a series of test runs in New York and a developmental production set in Atlanta," according to Aaron Schoonmaker of Raleigh-based WRAL-CBS. It is a "bit of a juggling act" to "recreate the low-lit, ragged look of 1980s minor league baseball while positioning oneself under the bright lights of Broadway -- and staying true to the classic story that is." RON SHELTON, who directed the original film, said, "We are trying to balance a lot of things. Romance, earthiness, bodyness, sexiness, silliness. That’s a lot of plates to keep in the air." Composer SUSAN WERNER is "getting her first cup of coffee at the theatre level, but the accomplished singer and songwriter has the support of the front office." Shelton said that Werner "turned about 40 songs for the production, only 18 of which will appear in the final product." Director MARC BRUNI is a "seasoned veteran having worked on 16 previous Broadway productions including Little Shop of Horrors, Legally Blonde and Grease." Signs point to Bull Durham "hitting the stage in the fall, or more likely," spring '17 (WRAL.com, 2/16).
