Pistons Experimenting With 360-Degree Panoramic Camera At The Palace

The Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment this season have been "experimenting with a 360-degree panoramic camera" at the Palace of Auburn Hills as a "potential new business tool in addition to being a cool fan experience," according to Bill Shea of CRAIN'S DETROIT BUSINESS. The team created a 360 video of player introductions from a November Cavaliers-Pistons game, and it has "received 2.8 million views on a platform created by Facebook.com for such videos." Another video from the Jan. 20 jersey retirement of Ben Wallace "has had more than 160,000 views." The camera was "mounted to the metal frame used to raise the banner to the Palace's rafters" for the Wallace video. PS&E VP/Brand Networks Mike Donnay said, "The performance and engagement metrics are just off the chart. Brands and sports teams are just really starting to explore the possibility of engaging fans with 360 videos. We're in the conversation now about creating a Facebook 360 channel." He added, "It gives the fan a real unique engagement and perspective traditional video just can't" (CRAIN'S DETROIT BUSINESS, 2/12 issue).
