Rainbow Bright: Tennis Players Embrace Colorful Ensembles For Australian Open

The Australian Open is the "opening style salvo of the year," as it "sets the tone" for the season, according to Vanessa Friedman of the N.Y. TIMES. The trends being unveiled this year are colorful, the "kind of saturated, sunset color most often associated with tropical drinks, as opposed to tennis." Serena Williams "kicked the whole thing off with her neon-yellow Nike crop top and skirt, not necessarily the best look for her (she resembled a bionic parakeet)." Then there was Maria Sharapova’s "peach-melba Nike halter dress with sheer mesh insert in back." It could "have something to do with beachy Australian inspirations; an effort to celebrate color before getting locked into the all-white situation at Wimbledon" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/26). TENNIS TUESDAY's Nina Pantic nominated Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios as her "Best Dressed" at the Australian Open. Dimitrov "donned the striped red top for his first round," and the "ensemble worked." Bringing back the sleeveless top "is fun." Kyrgios "wore a black singlet under his, while Dimitrov went all in." Pantic nominated Williams as her "Worst Dressed" player at the Open. Her yellow Nike outfit "was a little bit too much, or too little." The midriff-baring ensemble "was unique, but just doesn't really work, and the skirt looks more suited for a ballerina." The "vibrant neon yellow stands out but is overwhelming" (TENNISTUESDAY.net, 1/26).

FEDERER NATION: ESPN’s Brad Gilbert said of Roger Federer’s fans, “You know what hardcore Fed fans are doing right now. They're watching the match in the pressed sweatsuit, the RF sweatsuit. That's how focused and determined they are.” ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe said, “What about the RF hat?” Gilbert said, “That’s standard procedure.” ESPN’s Darren Cahill said he tried to buy a RF hat for his wife, but they were all sold out (“Australian Open,” ESPN2, 1/25).
