World TeamTennis Folds Sacramento Team Due To Ongoing Financial Issues

Sacramento has "lost its professional tennis team -- again," as the Mylan World TeamTennis California Dream folded this week, according to Dale Kasler of the SACRAMENTO BEE. The team was terminated "amid evidence of financial troubles." One sponsor said that it could be the "final chapter in Sacramento's long but increasingly chaotic tenure in the WTT." League Senior VP/Communications Rosie Crews said the franchise was terminated "due to noncompliance with their obligation to the league." Kasler notes WTT team owners "have to pay a fee in late December or early January to secure a spot for the upcoming season." News of the team's termination comes a month after its concessionaire, Randy Peters Catering, "sued the team and its three owners for failure to pay a $19,000 bill." The Dream "replaced the Sacramento Capitals, returning team tennis to the region after a one-year absence." The Capitals left Sacramento after 28 years for Las Vegas prior to the '14 season, but "never played a match" in the city. The Dream played their "lone season in a 2,400-seat stadium at Sunrise Mall" in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights. Attendance "totaled 9,036 for seven home matches" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 1/14).
