Weekend Plans With Hawks CEO Steve Koonin: Birthday Party, Catching Up On TV

For Hawks CEO STEVE KOONIN, weekends are usually centered more around work than pleasure, especially during the NBA season. But when time allows for it, he can kick back and relax with the best of them at his home in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. “Where we are in life, with my wife and I being empty nesters, we try to spend our weekends together,” he said. “My wife traveled with me during the playoffs last year and it was terrific. She has a huge real estate business, and a lot times she will be the one working on weekends and I will be the one home kind of vegging out.”

EIGHT DAYS A WEEK: During the season, weekends are fairly frenetic because we are usually playing games two or three weekends out of the month. When work is done for the week on Friday, I have my weekly radio show. I plan out my upcoming week and lay out exactly what we have to do. I have to do that both work-wise and at home because there are so many nights out at this job. That is the end of my work week unless we have a game on Friday, which we do not this week. My wife and I will then be attending a milestone birthday party for a friend of ours.

HAWK EYE: Saturday morning is spent catching up from the week around the house and cleaning out the DVR. Saturday mornings are a big “60 MINUTES” time in my house. Our game on Saturday is at 5:00pm ET -- an unusual time for us. I will get to the arena around 3:30pm and will walk around and see the Nickelodeon activities for the '90s night promotion. I have several clients and family joining me for the game and we will also have the NFL games on in the suite. Our game should be over around 8:00pm and then we are going to a dinner party at a friend’s house.

MEETING OF THE MINDS: I am headed to Miami early Sunday morning for the league’s sales and marketing meetings on Monday. We will be watching some football Sunday afternoon in Miami, conducting a few meetings with our team down there and then going to Heat President of Business Operations ERIC WOOLWORTH’s house for dinner Sunday evening.

DAWG EAT DAWG: We certainly enjoy the great restaurants Atlanta has to offer. There are some fabulous places. My wife does most of the cooking.I love anything Italian that she makes. I am not allowed in the kitchen except to eat. Our kids are grown -- 28 and 25 -- and we enjoy having them over on Sunday night for a family dinner and a little bit of football, which is a southern tradition. My favorite team is the Univ. of Georgia (first, second and third). I love the Braves and I love the Falcons, but it is all about 'dem Dawgs.
