NeuLion Creating New Mobile App Code Designed To Share 4K Video

Video streaming technology outfit NeuLion, which has been best known as a back-end service provider to entities such as the NFL and NBA, is making a significant consumer-facing initiative with the the creation of a new mobile application code named Project 88 designed for easy sharing of 4K-resolution video. The app, showcased at the ongoing ’16 CES in Las Vegas, will allow users to play 4K video shot on their smartphones and digital cameras on any other connected device, using the same Internet network, without the need for wires or other special hardware or software. Given many current mobile devices, such as latest-generation iPhones and Galaxy phones, can shoot 4K video, the app will be targeted in part as a means to easily share video shot at amateur sports events. “We think this can help create a real virtuous circle between 4K TV sets, which are desperate for additional 4K content, and phones and GoPro cameras that can now easily shoot in that format,” said NeuLion Exec VP/Marketplace Strategy Chris Wagner. The app, targeted for widespread release by the early spring, will be offered for free to users and supported by advertising with a pay option to remove the ads. The initiative in part leverages technology acquired last year in NeuLion’s purchase of digital video streaming outfit DivX.
