Jaguars Owner Brings Back Coach Gus Bradley For '16 Despite Continued Losing

Jaguars Owner Shahid Khan yesterday announced he "was retaining coach Gus Bradley," despite a 12-35 record during his years at the helm, according to a front-page piece by Ryan O'Halloran of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. Bradley's record as coach "would mean his automatic dismissal in most NFL markets." The Jaguars have not "been to the playoffs or finished with a winning record" since '07. But Bradley and GM Dave Caldwell "inherited one of the NFL’s worst rosters when they arrived in Jacksonville." Armed with salary cap space and eight more draft picks, the Caldwell-Bradley administration will "be defined by how it rebuilds the porous defense," that will determines "whether Khan is looking for new leadership a year from now" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 12/30). In Jacksonville, Gene Frenette writes Bradley's return for a fourth season "is no bombshell, given there's never been a hint of an imminent dismissal." Most, if not all, of the Bradley discontent was "confined to an understandably frustrated fan base." Had Khan "decided to pull the plug on the Bradley tenure, he would be perfectly justified." But in this particular situation, Khan and Caldwell "believe keeping Bradley for the final year of his contract will give the Jaguars a better chance to succeed" in '16. But by "electing to keep Bradley aboard, it’s imperative that he gives the Jaguars something vital in return: either a playoff berth or a 10-win season should be the minimum requirement next year for the 49-year-old boss to keep his job" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 12/30).

TIME WAS ON HIS SIDE: The TIMES-UNION's O'Halloran notes sticking with Bradley is again Khan’s way of "telling fans how big of a dumpster fire the team was" in '12, his first as owner. The Jaguars had to "get worse, clearing cap space and dead weight off the roster, before starting the process of getting better." It does not "mean this year hasn’t been a disappointment (it has), but with a few tweaks, there should be some hope" for '16 (JACKSONVILLE.com, 12/29).
