Grand Prix Of Boston CEO Takes Lesser Role After Past Tax Charges Discovered

Grand Prix of Boston CEO Mark Perrone is "no longer handling negotiations with the city and state to hold the race," according to Joe Battenfeld of the BOSTON HERALD. His organization "confirmed the internal leadership changes." Perrone, who was "indicted by federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty to tax charges" in '99, has "moved to a 'lesser role,' the latest unexpected bump in the Grand Prix-style event set for next fall." Race spokesperson Sean Flanagan said, "Mark is still the CEO of the Boston Grand Prix, he has taken a reduced role due to personal health reasons." Flanagan added that Perrone’s reduced role "is not related to his criminal record." Flanagan: "I do not see how Mark’s personal history is relevant to the event" (BOSTON HERALD, 12/23). In Boston, Dan Adams notes Perrone pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Boston in '99 to "two counts of willful failure to file timely income taxes" and was "sentenced to two years probation and a $10,000 fine." In '03, court documents show Perrone was "released from liens involving a balance of $323,288 that he owed the federal government for taxes" between '94 and '00. In '14, Perrone again had liens "placed on his home from the federal and state governments for nearly $16,600 in back income taxes and penalties" from '10 through '12. Also in '14, a Texas mortgage servicing company "initiated foreclosure proceedings" on his home in Ipswich, Mass. (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/23).
