Tournament Of Roses Officials Worried About Bowl Game Finances Under CFP Format

The CFP format has the Tournament of Roses Association "a little nervous" about the Rose Bowl, as it no longer has the potential to host two postseason college football games, according to Jason Henry of the PASADENA STAR-NEWS. TofR President Michael Matthiessen said that in recent years, the non-profit "relied on a second, more lucrative game through the now-defunct BCS system." Matthiessen: "Now, if we get any extra money, we’re building a war chest in case we find out in this new playoff system that we’re playing half-empty (stadiums).” Rose Bowl officials have said that this year's event is "already set to surpass" the revenue from last year, when the Rose Bowl was a CFP semifinal. Matthiessen: "We take our money and put it to what is an even bigger effort, and that’s our parade. This is what puts Pasadena on the map. The parade is our holy grail, our sacred cow.” Henry cites tax filings from '14 as showing that the TofR sent $19M to both the Big 10 and Pac-12, and another $50M to the NCAA. That left about $40M to "cover the costs of the Rose Bowl Game, the BCS championship game and the parade." During a regular year, the "leftover amount after paying the two conferences" drops to about $20M. The TofR made $1.6M in profit in '13, compared to $12.4M when it "also hosted the BCS championship game." In some years, like '12, it "ran into the red." Matthiessen: “We’re not rolling in dough. ... We can’t throw big parties, we can’t do junkets like the Fiesta Bowl. We’re counting bagels and donuts, and making sure everything is accounted for.” Matthiessen said that last year's CFP semifinal game "helped, but not as much as a BCS championship game" (PASADENA STAR-NEWS, 12/17).
