Chargers' Spanos, Raiders' Davis Reaffirm Carson Stadium Plan, Decline Kroenke's Offer

The Chargers and the Raiders "remain committed to building a stadium together in Carson, Calif., if owners of the other NFL franchises approve the teams’ applications to move" to the L.A. area, according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. Chargers Chair Dean Spanos in a letter sent last week to the league's Committee on L.A. Opportunities "dismissed an overture" by Rams Owner Stan Kroenke, "who said he was willing to let a second team invest in a rival stadium that he hoped to build in Inglewood, Calif." Spanos wrote, "Nothing in Stan’s letter gives me any reason to reconsider my partnership with [Raiders Owner] Mark Davis and our chosen stadium site." Davis "sent a similar letter" to the L.A. committee (N.Y. TIMES, 12/15).

HELP ME IF YOU CAN: A K.C. STAR editorial states Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon "seems to be having a Don Quixote moment with his underdog quest to promote outsized taxpayer financing" for a $1B new football stadium in St. Louis. It appears Nixon is "expending a great deal of political capital on a project that, if not a lost cause, certainly faces long odds." Indeed, there "may be a case to be made for a new stadium," but Nixon "should have done more to make it to lawmakers." His "insistence on barging forward without a serious effort to overcome legislative resistance might have created an unmovable obstacle" (K.C. STAR, 12/15).
