Hey Batter: MLBPA Launching Social Media Site Allowing Fans To Connect With Players

The MLBPA today announced the launch of Infield Chatter, an online social media community where baseball fans can connect directly with MLB players. The union-owned website will allow fans to engage with more than 60 MLB players who have already signed up to participate in the site, including Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson, Red Sox DH David Ortiz, Royals 1B Eric Hosmer, Orioles CF Adam Jones and Cubs P Jake Arrieta. Beginning today, Infield Chatter is open to all fans, 13 years old and older. The union will seek corporate sponsors for the site, which is believed to be the first website for fans and players of a sport to be able to communicate with each other on a variety of topics. MLBPA Exec Dir Tony Clark said, “As a former player, I understand how important it is to reinforce and strengthen the connection between the players and fans. Infield Chatter takes full advantage of today’s emerging technology to allow the players and fans to interact in a space that they’re familiar with and about topics they have in common. We’re excited about the potential Infield Chatter has to help bolster the popularity of the players and the game itself.” The site has been in a soft launch, and over the past several weeks, social media followers of the initial participating players received invitations to join them inside the Infield Chatter community. Each player has a personal page on Infield Chatter where fans can learn more about the player's interests outside the ballpark. More MLB players are expected to join InfieldChatter.com in the future.
