Univ. Of Miami Close To Selling Out Men's Hoops Season Tickets For First Time

The Univ. of Miami men's basketball team "could be the first in school history to sell out its allotment of season tickets," according to Tim Reynolds of the AP. The school said that "more than 5,400 tickets have been purchased, with fewer than 500 remaining." BankUnited Center's listed capacity "is about" 8,000. UM won 25 games last season, so there is a "buzz" around the program. Getting fans to the games is the "next issue." UM "distributed 5,525 tickets per game" last season, but the actual average number of people inside the building was "roughly 40% lower, with only 3,534 going through the turnstiles on game nights." Some fans "make no secret that they buy season tickets just to ensure they have seats to the 'big' home games, a list that this season includes" Florida, Duke, Louisville, Virginia, Notre Dame and Syracuse. UM coach Jim Larranaga will keep "trying whatever he can to lure people inside." This week, UM will do "what it calls 'dormstorming' to try and push students" to games. Larranaga has "made a point to promote ticket sales during his camp for kids" in an effort to "get the parents as well" (AP, 11/9).
