Triple-A Red Sox Still Want New Ballpark, But Not Closing Door Yet On Pawtucket

Triple-A Int'l League Pawtucket Red Sox Chair Larry Lucchino said that a new ballpark is "important for 'fulfilling the vision that we have for this franchise,' but he’s following 'no timetables' for when that might happen and has no plans to put forth a proposal to the Rhode Island General Assembly," according to Kate Bramson of the PROVIDENCE JOURNAL. Lucchino said that the club has received a number of inquiries from "established entities and municipalities asking the team to consider" a new ballpark there, including Providence and Brown Univ. in Rhode Island and Worcester, Springfield and Fall River in Massachusetts. Bramson notes although the PawSox have "previously rejected overtures from Pawtucket to stay there, Lucchino did not shut the door." He said, "We, at this point, are taking the position that we are open to everything, every possibility.” New PawSox President Charles Steinberg said that the team "wants to see 'passion again' in Pawtucket, before deciding whether to move the team out of the city" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 11/10). In Providence, Tim Britton writes yesterday "marked a fresh start." Steinberg: "Let's get to know folks. People talk about the idiosyncrasies of Rhode Island; ... Let's get to know that." Britton notes the organization also "understands the harm caused by its flirtation with Providence." Team brass "acknowledged regrets from the last year and a wiser, more patient approach for the coming one." Steinberg: "We have a repair job to do here. There's work to be done. There were wounds suffered by fans here last year, and we're acutely aware of those" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 11/10).
