Little-Known Apparel Company Sees Big Growth After Arrieta Wears Product On TV

New York-based apparel company Greater Than Sports got a "big break" during the MLB postseason when Cubs P Jake Arrieta wore one of the company's hats in a "SportsCenter" interview after Game 3 of the team's NLDS against the Cardinals, according to Jennifer Gish of the Albany TIMES UNION. Greater Than Sports co-Owner and Marketing Dir Dan Gejay said that there were 1,000 Google searches of the company's name "between midnight and dawn" following the game. A couple dozen orders "came in for the hats and other apparel that night," with "many of them" from Chicago. The sales spike "continued for days." Gish noted the company's three owners "share a mutual friend" with Cubs Baseball Operations Manager Darnell McDonald. The friend "connected them via Twitter and said McDonald, who was into yoga, would like GTS' clothes." Gejay said, "Jake asked him where he got the clothing from. Darnell asked if we could send them out for Jake." Gish noted a fan then "took a picture with Arrieta outside Wrigley wearing the hat and tagged Arrieta" on Twitter. The company saw the photo, "because they'd been following everything written about Arrieta on social media, hoping to see him in their products." The interview on ESPN "came a few days later." Gejay: "It kind of went from zero to 100 real quick" (Albany TIMES UNION, 10/22).
