AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco Enthusiastic About Growth Of Conference

American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco, whose conference now has three football teams in the top 25, said he is "having more fun than I've had in the past," according to Tom Schad of the Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL. Aresco said, "Although, I would say we had some success the first few years in the conference. ... This year, it's just gone so well. We keep increasing our wins over the so-called P5." When asked what role the conference's TV deal played in the overall growth of the AAC, Aresco responded, "It's been huge. We would disappear if we didn't have the kind of exposure we have. ABC (Saturday), we had ABC with Virginia Tech-ECU. We have ESPN pretty much every week on Thursday, Friday -- either ESPN or ESPN2. We have ESPNU, ESPNEWS, we have ESPN3 for some of the games that aren't as marquee. Without that kind of exposure, you can't build a brand. You just can't do it. Because people aren't going to notice you. But they noticed the Miami-Cincinnati game, national TV audience. They noticed the Memphis-Cincinnati game." Aresco said of possibly relocating the AAC's HQ to a more centralized location, "We've thought about it and I know some reports had us considering Dallas. We didn't deny that. We were thinking about possible places that might be more centrally-located because the geographic footprint of this conference has changed dramatically. We're not the old Big East anymore. We've been happy in Providence and we're going to explore some options. I don't want to say we are moving. That hasn't been decided. But we're exploring options now" (COMMERCIALAPPEAL.com, 10/20).
