Steelers' Heyward Facing Stiffer Fine From NFL For Violating Uniform Policy Again

Steelers DE Cameron Heyward was fined nearly $6,000 last week by the NFL for "wearing eye black honoring his late father, Craig 'Ironhead' Heyward, and could face even a stiffer penalty" following Sunday's game against the Cardinals for "violating the NFL's uniform policy again," according to the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. Heyward yesterday "wore eye black that says 'Iron' and 'Head' ... and will now face a fine of $11,576 by the league." Despite "wearing the eye black all season, Heyward wasn't fined" until last week's game against the Chargers (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 10/19). Asked if he would keep wearing the eye black, Heyward said, "That's the goal. There have been others, and I'm not going to name any names, that have worn it to support cancer. I don't want to get involved in it, but it's bigger than me. I'm not going to shy away from the fight against cancer, and I'm going to support them in any way possible" (ESPN.com, 10/18). CBS Sports Network's Amy Trask noted she is "well aware and knowledgeable about the rules and I know why the rules exist," but she said, "You have to have exceptions to rules." Trask: "We have exceptions to rules all over in our lives ... and I would have created an exception for Cam Heyward to honor his father, a great NFL player. That was okay with me. And you know what? I would have made an exception for DeAngelo Williams as well. There's every reason to make an exception in certain circumstances” (“That Other Pregame Show,” CBS Sports Network, 10/18).
