World Series Of Fighting Introducing Several One-Night Tournaments For '16 Schedule

World Series of Fighting is "tentatively scheduled to promote" 12 live events next year, "including multiple one-night tournaments," according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com. The MMA outfit "will host its first one-night tournament on Nov. 20 in Phoenix." The tournament "consists of eight lightweights, plus four alternates." WSOF CEO Carlos Silva said that the organization is "already planning another tournament" in '16, and that the "old-school format could become an integral piece of WSOF content moving forward." Silva: "We go to one city for one night and you're the winner of that one day. At the end of the year, we'll have a number of cities that have hosted these tournaments and we'll have winners of those cities. They're not titleholders or world champions, but they'll be able to say they were the winner of 'Phoenix 2015.' I think as we build those one-day tournaments in those cities, you'll see that become a part of WSOF branding." Okamoto noted as part of its deal with NBCSN, WSOF "will receive two dates" on the NBC broadcast channel in '16. The dates "will likely feature original WSOF content like the 'Unstoppable' series, which is built around highlights and fighter interviews." Silva noted that there is "no plan to create a tiered structure of live events for WSOF, as other large fight promotions have done." Unlike UFC PPV or Bellator MMA tentpole events, "each WSOF card will receive similar marketing strategies" (ESPN.com, 10/11).
