Rangers Not Discussing Ballpark Plans Despite Speculation Of Dallas Relocation

MLB Rangers ownership will soon "need to look at the team's future -- mainly where it will play baseball decades from now," according to Jeff Mosier of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. A decline in attendance this year "led to speculation about what the Rangers might do when the team's contract with Arlington and Globe Life Park expires in less than a decade." That is a topic Rangers officials "are uninterested in discussing publicly." Rangers Exec VP/Communications John Blake in an email wrote, "We have a lease at Globe Life Park with the City of Arlington until April 2024." Rangers officials "shot down speculation that lower attendance this year was a sign of problems at Globe Life Park or a waning fan base in Arlington." Attendance was down about 8% "despite a late season rally and playoff appearance." Blake said that the drop "was the result of the disastrous" '14 season when the team had the AL's worst record. If the Rangers "decided to move to Dallas, it's difficult to know how that would affect walkup ticket sales." That might "depend greatly on the location and ease of access." There are also "cases to be made for ignoring trends and staying in Arlington." The team "has an established fan base in Tarrant County and knows what to expect." Securing a stadium deal "likely would be easier and more predictable in Arlington" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/11).

SHOW OF SUPPORT: Rangers co-Chair Ray Davis was among those in the organization who were "blown away by the gesture the Mavericks made" before yesterday's ALDS Game 3 at Globe Life Park. The Mavs "sent a giant banner that read: 'The Dallas Mavericks proudly support the Texas Rangers' on one side and 'Go Rangers' on the other." In the middle "was a picture of the ballpark." Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban via email wrote, "It was a collective (idea)" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 10/12).
