Dodgers' Scully Won't Call Postseason After Medical Procedure; Full Recovery Expected

Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully will "not be working" during the postseason as he recovers from a recent medical procedure, according to Bill Plaschke of the L.A. TIMES. Details of the procedure were not made available, but sources said that it was "not life threatening and that Scully, 87, is expected to make a full recovery for what he has said probably will be his final season" in '16. Charley Steiner will join Rick Monday and "temporarily replace Scully" behind the radio microphone. Scully's health had "been in question after he missed the Dodgers' final seven games for which he is normally available" -- four games in S.F against the Giants and the season-ending, three-game homestand against the Padres. The Dodgers announced that he "missed that final weekend with a cold, but because of Scully's age, many correctly worried it was something more" (L.A. TIMES, 10/9). ESPN L.A.'s Mark Saxon noted the plan for the Dodgers' NLDS games was for Scully to "work the first three innings and the final three," with Steiner and Monday handling the middle innings. Scully was "not scheduled to work any of the games on TV" (ESPNLA.com, 10/8). The N.Y. Daily News’ Bob Raissman said, “Any time a guy of his prestige, of his age, of his legend ... has something medically wrong, you get a little scared.” SNY’s Sal Licata: “It’s sad for all of baseball, and specifically the Dodger fans, who were looking forward to listening to him on the radio” (“Daily News Live,” SNY, 10/8).
