Univ. Of Wisconsin On Verge Of 10-Year Deal With Under Armour, Replacing Adidas

The Univ. of Wisconsin athletic department "appears poised to enter" into a new apparel deal with Under Armour after 15 years with adidas, according to Jason Galloway of the WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL. The UW Business & Finance Committee was scheduled to vote this morning to "approve a 10-year contract with Under Armour that would give the university a significant boost in revenue." If approved, the UW Board of Regents "would then vote on the resolution" tomorrow morning. The UW Athletic Board, which next meets Oct. 16, "must also approve the contract." UW would "receive an annual cash contribution" of $4M from UA on top of $3.3M in product for the school’s 23 sports programs during the first year of the deal. During UW's contract with adidas, the school "received somewhere between $750,000-$800,000 each year in cash compensation." Product contributions following the first year of the UA deal "would be worth" between $2.45-3.05M annually. UW’s contract with adidas "expires on June 30, 2016." Other principle provisions include UW receiving an "annual guaranteed minimum licensing royalty" from UA. Under the current agreement, adidas "pays UW-Madison an annual guaranteed minimum licensing royalty of $100,000." In the proposed agreement with Under Armour, that amount "increases to $450,000." Also, in the first and second year of the contract, Under Armour "would pay UW-Madison up to $250,000 for total compensation of up to $500,000, to be allocated for the rebranding of University’s athletic facilities and build-out of team areas, including design work and installation." In the first year, Under Armour would also pay UW $150,000 to be "allocated toward the rebranding and build-out of retail space in Bucky’s Locker Room for the placement of Under Armour products and promotional materials" (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 10/7).
