Tulane AD Rick Dickson Announces Retirement; Legacy Includes New Football Stadium

Tulane AD Rick Dickson on Friday announced that "he will retire in May," leaving a legacy that includes "consistent losing in football and basketball but with the possibility of a brighter future thanks to dramatically improved facilities, a conference upgrade and fewer roadblocks," according to Smith & Kushner of the New Orleans ADVOCATE. Dickson has been in his current position since '00, and the "crowning jewel of his tenure is Yulman Stadium, a 30,000-seat facility that brought football back on campus" for the first time since '74. Dickson "worked tirelessly to make happen." He also was behind the school's move to leave Conference USA in '14 for the AAC, a "higher-profile league that increased television exposure and revenue." Meawhile, Dickson "guided the athletic department through a pair of potentially crippling events." Former school President Scott Cowen in '03 "ordered a review of the athletic department, in large part to determine whether continuing to play Division I football was worthwhile." Two years later, Hurricane Katrina "devastated the community and campus, damaging facilities and forcing the shutdown of several sports." Tulane by '07 had "restored a full complement of 16 sports, but the disaster had a lingering effect on the athletic program" (New Orleans ADVOCATE, 9/26).

FLY BOY: The Univ. of Dayton on Friday promoted 35-year-old Deputy AD Neil Sullivan to VP & AD. He will succeed Tim Wabler, who announced his retirement earlier this month after 22 years with the school, including eight as AD (Dayton).
