Lucas With The Lid On: Roof At Colts Stadium May Remain Closed Amid Safety Concerns

Lucas Oil Stadium's roof "opened and closed properly two times Thursday, but there is no decision yet on whether it will be open" for Saturday's Kentucky State-Central State football game, according to Mark Alesia of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. A 7/8-inch bolt, which is like a half-roll of quarters, "injured three people at the Colts' preseason game Sept. 3, when it split into pieces and fell from the retractable roof as it was opening late in the first half." The roof "remained closed for five high school football games last weekend and for Monday night's Colts game" (INDYSTAR.com, 9/24). Indiana Stadium & Convention Building Authority Exec Dir John Klipsch said that the falling bolt "should not be considered an unusual problem for a 7-year-old stadium." He added, "All brand new structures have a loose screw or bolt after seven years. It’s not something that’s unusual in all construction or manufacturing." Klipsch "did not necessarily agree that officials should have inspected the roof for potential problems before the bolt fell." He said that he "didn't know how much repairs would cost, but added 'we're confident it's not a huge number'" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 9/25).
