Univ. Of Miami Changes Football Jersey Nameplates After Confusion, Twitter Ridicule

The Univ. of Miami has "sacked" the new font on its football jerseys, which "mixes upper and lower case lettering for players’ names, making it difficult to distinguish some of them," according to Susan Miller Degnan of the MIAMI HERALD. UM AD Blake James on Tuesday tweeted, "After further review we have decided to change the nameplate font on all @CanesFootball jerseys to a traditional block letter font." Degnan noted many fans "did not appreciate the lettering, and Twitter was abuzz with jokes when the Adidas uniforms were worn for the first time in the Sept. 5 home opener." James in a text message wrote, "I thought it was hard to read some of the names. They will be done for Cincy [on Oct. 1]" (MIAMI HERALD, 9/23).

SUN CYCLE: In Phoenix, Andrew Joseph noted Arizona State on Tuesday night tweeted a "new promotional Adidas countdown image" of its football uniforms. The five-day countdown "showed a player carrying the hammer with a metallic background and the caption, 'Be the hammer.'" The uniforms "will be unveiled Sunday and shouldn't be the last alternate look we will see from ASU and Adidas, as game-specific alternates will be worn against Oregon and Arizona" (AZCENTRAL.com, 9/23).

BAND OF BOTHERS: In Pittsburgh, Craig Meyer noted Duquesne has "unveiled six jerseys" for the '15-16 basketball season. The "growing, Adidas-inspired trend of college basketball teams having cummerbund-like bands across the waist of their jerseys needs to undergo a quick and efficient death." Meyer: "There's no way around it" (POST-GAZETTE.com, 9/22).
