Going Digital: Pirates, Reds, Cardinals Among MLB Teams Using iPads In Dugouts

Pirates GM & Senior VP Neal Huntington said that his club is "among a handful of teams" using iPads in the dugout during games "under strict guidelines set up by MLB," according to Rob Biertempfel of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. The iPads "cannot be connected" to WiFi while a game is in progress, so "all the information on the device -- scouting reports and other such data -- must be downloaded before the game." Huntington: "At this point, it's more of a personal preference thing. Do you want to use the scouting books or are you more comfortable with the technology?" Pirates 1B coach Nick Leyva "still prefers the old-school method." Leyva: "It's the same information, but I prefer to write everything down myself on paper." Biertempfel notes it is "possible the limits on how iPads are used during games will evolve and expand once teams become comfortable with the technology" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 9/24). In Cincinnati, C. Trent Rosecrans notes the Reds "have had four iPads in their dugout" during this week's series with the Cardinals and "can continue to use them the rest of the season." Reds manager Bryan Price said that he has "yet to use the iPad and still prefers his card and binder with a load of information." But if others process that information "better on an iPad, he’s all for it." Reds RF Jay Bruce said that he looked at an iPad on Monday, the "first game it was in use, just to look at it." Bruce: "If it's there, if it's going to make me more successful, I'll use it" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 9/24). Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that moving information to the iPad "has cut his prep work with some statistics in half" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/24).
