Marketplace Roundup

In Portland, Allan Brettman wrote no one is suggesting that adidas announcing it will outfit the NHL will "pay immediate dividends in boosting the fortunes for the world's second-biggest sports footwear and apparel brand." But adidas can "point to the NHL deal as one of its small, but significant victories of late," such as the signings of Rockets G James Harden and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. While adidas has "followed through on signing more top-level athletes," adidas North Ameica President Mark King on Tuesday acknowledged that the company "had indeed been interested in renewing with the NBA." The two sides "just couldn't reach acceptable terms" (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/17).

BEAR MARKET: In Chicago, Lewis Lazare cited sources as saying that the Bears have issued RFPs "to no fewer than 12 ad agencies" as the team seeks a new marketing firm. Two by Four, Chicago, the team's longtime agency, is "said to be in the mix," as is Energy BBDO, Chicago. Sources said that Two by Four "has at least a decent shot at retaining" the account (BIZJOURNALS.com, 9/17).

PINK POWER: Pro Bull Riding on Friday announced the creation of a "Pink Promise" campaign, which raises money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation leading up to the Built Ford Tough Series World Finals next month in Las Vegas. The campaign begins this weekend in Charlotte. PBR sponsor Wrangler has designated the next three Friday competitions as "Wrangler Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night." One designated "bounty bull" each Friday will carry a $5,000 bonus, with $2,500 of that going to the BCRF if the rider makes a qualified, 8-second ride. PBR will match donations to the cause of up to $5,000, and from Friday through Sept. 27, 25% of PBR merch sales will go to the BCRF (Josh Carpenter, Staff Writer).
