Blatter Under Additional Scrutiny Following Reports Of Suspicious TV Deal With Warner

Outgoing FIFA President Sepp Blatter "is under fresh scrutiny" after reports "linked him to a suspicious television rights deal" with former CONCACAF President Jack Warner, according to Nathaniel Vinton of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The reports come as U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch visited Switzerland and said the international probe into soccer corruption "has expanded." Lynch during a news conference in Zurich said, "We do anticipate pursuing additional charges against individuals and entities." However, she "declined to say if Blatter is a target." Lynch's Switzerland trip "came days after Swiss broadcaster SFR published details of a 2005 contract that Blatter and Warner signed in which FIFA granted Warner’s Caribbean Football Union the rights" to the '10 and '14 FIFA World Cups "for just $600,000." SFR reported that Warner "transferred the rights to his private company and sold them for more than" $15M. Warner "has yet to enter a plea and remains in his native Trinidad." It is not clear when or if U.S. prosecutors "will succeed in having him extradited to Brooklyn to face charges of racketeering, money laundering and fraud" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/15). In N.Y., Rebecca Ruiz notes Lynch closed her news conference "with a warning 'to anyone who seeks to live in the past and to return soccer to the days of corruption and bribery, cronyism and patronage.'" Lynch: "You are on the wrong side of progress" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/15).
